Since the 1970s this green oasis has been entirely surrounded by the Cotes Park Industrial Estate, whose drainage and sewage system has been directed straight into the ponds, with no regard for the wildlife on-site or the potential for pollution it was causing.

With a grant of £48,300 from Biffa Award, Derbyshire Environmental Trust (DET) worked with Pennytown Ponds Group to deliver a project that would improve water quality, wildlife and biodiversity on the site, while allowing the public to enjoy the local nature reserve.

The work carried out at the site has brought members of the community and local agencies together in a lasting partnership to safeguard the future of the site.
