New improvements to Walgrave village hall playing field means fun for the whole community
02 June 2015

Walgrave Village Hall & Playing Field Association in Northamptonshire has secured a £50,000 grant from Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The restoration project at Walgrave Village Hall’s playing field aims to protect and enhance the future of the play area as a recreational facility for the community and visitors to the area. The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, will provide exercise and play apparatus for the whole community.

The improvements will create an outdoor amenity for both local children and adults, installing play and fitness equipment that allows users to progress at every age from babies to senior citizens.  The grant will revamp the old play area and create a larger, exciting new recreational space with sports based playground and exercise equipment, as well as everyday favourites including timber based traditional creative play items.  It will also improve the environment of the recreation area making it a safer, more attractive area that can be well maintained.

Ruby Cole, Booking Secretary – Grant Applicant, said:

“We have been so lucky to have been awarded this grant from Biffa Award. The whole village community have the opportunity to benefit from the much needed and long awaited play areas.”

Mrs Laura Kaye, Parent in the community said:

“Some 12 years ago, I was part of a fund raising group who managed to raise enough money to build a very small play area. Our children, and so many others in Walgrave, have enjoyed years of playing here. Now this equipment is so worn out and inadequate for the needs of a growing population, we wanted to generate interest to replace and expand the playground. We are hugely grateful to Biffa for supporting us in this mission. This area brings families together and provides many of those happy, carefree childhood memories.”

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said:

We’re pleased to be able to support Walgrave Village Hall & Playing Field Association’s hard work, which will provide a quality community facility that can be enjoyed by all ages.  It is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help transform local spaces for the community.”
