Local community centre benefits from funding boost

The St Alban’s Centre in Holmewood, Chesterfield has secured a £16,000 grant from Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The improvement project awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Community Buildings theme, via Derbyshire Environmental Trust, will replace the badly worn floor in the main hall and replace the old, unreliable boiler with a more efficient model.

Built in 2000, St Alban's Centre is a well used local facility, catering to a range of groups including parent and toddler sessions, children's holiday clubs, sports coaching and training for 11 - 19 year olds, fitness and dancing classes, lunch club, table tennis and an art class.  Once the project works have been completed, the committee hopes to be able to welcome new community groups and activities to the facility.

Diana Yates, Youth & Community Officer, said:

“The new flooring and a reliable heating system will really boost activities at St Alban’s Centre, allowing many more members of the community to come together in a safe and warm space.  Thanks Biffa Award!”

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said:

“This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help improve local spaces for use by the local community.”
