Lampeter Rugby Football Club scoops national award win and brings home the trophy
31 October 2014

A rugby and football club in Lampeter, Ceredigion, is celebrating success after scooping a prestigious environmental and community award at the Biffa Awards 2014.

The club was today named as winner of the ‘Recreation’ category for their ‘Lampeter RFC Community Recreation Facilities’ project.  Competing against recreation facilities from across the UK, the club received £2,000 in prize money, which they can use to further develop their project.  The passion of the volunteers has inspired other local projects and led to better social inclusion which impressed the independent Biffa Award judge and saw them edge ahead of their competitors.

Administered by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, Biffa Award distributes grants to environmental and community projects, using landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Group Ltd.  Each year, the people transforming their communities and improving the environment through Biffa Award projects are recognised at the Biffa Awards ceremony.  This year more than 260 completed projects competed to win a prize in one of five categories – Community Buildings, Recreation, Small Grants, Cultural Facilities and Rebuilding Biodiversity.

The club received £49,000 in funding from Biffa Award to install a new energy efficient environmental heating system, water saving showers, new toilet facilities and new UPVC double glazed windows and doors at the clubhouse.  The community now has a facility which it can be proud of, and which can be utilised for public enjoyment in recreational activities.

This year’s Awards were held today at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. The theme for the Awards was creating positive change’ and sought to celebrate the people behind the projects that are helping to build and rebuild their local communities in these difficult economic times.

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said:

“The Biffa Awards are a unique opportunity to celebrate and reward the dedicated people who are delivering some of the excellent projects we have funded. All of our projects deserve recognition for the work they do, but we are delighted for Lampeter Rugby Football Club on their success at this year’s Awards. Their flagship work within this small rural club has led to them becoming an inspiration to other local organisations and creating an opportunity for improved social cohesion.”
