Performing Arts Academy given funding boost

Kala Sangam, the Academy of South Asian Performing Arts in Bradford, has secured a £47,944 grant from Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Cultural Facilities theme, will fix load bearing problems in this Grade II listed building. Kala Sangam aims to create a flexible, well-equipped facility at St Peter's House, making it more attractive to visitors and community groups; and enabling more people to participate in community-generated activities.

The refurbishment will result in a high quality cultural facility, and a building for use by community groups and individual community members, children, young people, older people and families. The project will refurbish the Indus Room (major events space), resolving the floor load-bearing limit and making it a fit-for-purpose activity room suitable for a diverse range of community activities and public events.

Ajit Singh, Chief Executive, Kala Sangam said:

This project will greatly enhance our proposed centre of excellence for intercultural arts, allowing the muli-art use of all spaces by artists and art companies. It will also cater for private and commercial uses to help generate additional income while helping to sustain the company’s core operations of creating and promoting great arts heritage and culture for all. The new spaces created will also offer new improved spaces to all our community partners, charities and voluntary groups.

Dr. Chellathurai Gnanananda (Beneficiary) said:

I’m really looking forward to the refurbished Idus hall and new foyer spaces. The project will be a great boon to all of our academy students and musicians who work with us on our various projects round the year, and will enable us to have a second performance space.

Gillian French, Head of Grants, Biffa Award, said:

“This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help create industry leading cultural facilities. We’re really excited to see the finished result; the team at Kala Sangam are working really hard to create a really special venue to celebrate the performing arts.”
