Holgate Windmill Preservation Society in York were awarded £43,285 for the final stages of the renovation of the windmill, to restore the sail frames which hold the shutters in place to spill the wind, and to install fencing around the mill to make it safer for visitors to enjoy.

With strong volunteering participation from the beginning, the project has inspired and motivated the local community, with volunteers undertaking practical work as well as fundraising activities at this nationally important heritage building.

The windmill impressed at the Biffa Awards in 2012 and went on to receive the Cultural Facilities award.
