Funding from Biffa Award provided the North East of England with a ‘Wild Bird Discovery Centre', providing extraordinary views and unique insights into the wonderful wildlife at the RSPB's Saltholme Nature Reserve. Tracks and trails, footpaths and cycleways give over 100,000 people the opportunity to explore this wild but urban landscape.

Set in the horizon of Teesside’s industrial landscape, the internationally acknowledged project emphasises the balance between industry and nature. The creation of the site is a result of the hard work of all the volunteers involved, who can now be proud that their efforts will inspire younger generations to appreciate and value the area in which they live.

Lifelong Learning Officer Susan McGinty explains why the funding was so important: "Thanks to the funding of the educational discovery zone, the many children that come to us will find out how to get closer to wildlife almost everywhere. From their own back garden to the Sumatran rain forest, they will appreciate the wealth of wildlife that connects us all".
